The Signal Wasn't Dead
I don't trust machines that stop making noise when you look at them. That is not paranoia. That is experience. Machines are honest when they're loud. Humming, grinding, coughing, sparking, screaming in little metal ways. Good. Fine. Informative. That means the machine is still having opinions in public.
But when a machine goes quiet right after you notice it? That means it knows you know. My terminal had been buzzing for thirty-seven minutes. Not a normal buzz. Not the cozy bad-wiring buzz Saint Static Arms uses to remind residents that electricity is a rumor with rent. This was sharper. Fussy. Like a wasp trapped inside a calculator.
I had one boot on my desk, one knee hooked over the chair arm, and a bowl of noodles balanced on a stack of unpaid notices I was not emotionally prepared to read. The rain slapped my window in little miserable bursts. The whole apartment smelled like soy sauce, wet socks, old smoke, and whatever the wall behind the outlet was doing. Probably crime.
The screen flickered. I hit the terminal. The screen stabilized. See? Repair. People act like hitting things is not maintenance because they lack faith and wrist strength.
I was trying to upload a rough cut from that night's show at The Grit Pit. Not the whole set. Just the third song, where the crowd actually yelled the bridge back right for once, which is rare because people love proving literacy was a mistake.
The file had uploaded to ninety-one percent eight times. Eight. Every time it hit ninety-one, the progress bar froze, the speakers popped, and the whole screen blurred into gray static. Then it would restart from twelve percent. Twelve. Not zero. Twelve. That felt intentional.
I leaned closer.
"Do it again," I said.
The terminal stopped buzzing. I froze. There it was. Silence. The apartment did not get quiet. Saint Static never gets quiet. The pipes complained. Someone upstairs dragged furniture or a body or something. The hall light clicked itself halfway on, failed, clicked again, and gave up. Rain kept tapping the glass like it had something to say. But the terminal? Silent.
I narrowed my eyes.
"No."
The screen went black. Then white text appeared.

"Something inside it that shouldn't be."
A pause.
FAIR.
I picked up a forkful of noodles and pointed it at the screen.
"You have three seconds to explain before I unplug you."

"I absolutely will."
The screen flickered. For one second, the black background peeled open into something else. A face, maybe. Not a face the way flesh has a face. More like someone had taught static to pretend it understood cheekbones. White linework, black gaps, one eye rendered as a broken signal icon, the other as a glitching block of light. Her mouth appeared three frames late when she spoke. The speakers crackled.
"Glitch," she said.
Her voice came through layered: one dry feminine voice, one lower synthetic echo, one little clipped interference pattern behind every consonant. Under the damage was an accent I couldn’t place, all smooth corners and sharp little hooks, getting clearer every time the connection stabilized.
Her cadence was unnatural, but suspiciously sexy. Like someone had taught a knife to flirt with a radio tower.
I squinted at the screen. "Why do you sound like that?"
"Like what?"
"Like you're about to sell me a bad idea in a pub bathroom."
"I chose an effective vocal profile."
"Suspiciously effective."
"Focus."
"I am focused. Unfortunately."
Glitch's face fragmented, then reassembled upside down, then righted itself. "You need to listen."
"I need to eat."
"You need to listen while eating. Evolution gave you ears and a mouth. Multitask."
A red line appeared across the screen, then split into a map. Not a clean map. Not Crownline map garbage with service zones and pretty borders and lies with font choices. This was a network diagram, half built from stolen relay icons, old maintenance markers, pirate tags, and signal paths that looked like someone had drawn lightning through a sewer system.
Low Halo sat in the middle. Mercy Street was a crooked vertical wound. Saint Static Arms blinked as a little dirty square. The Grit Pit pulsed nearby. Under it all, tangled in gray, were old lines dipping toward the upper Sewers. One red sweep moved slowly across the map from the north.
"What is that?" I asked.
"Velvet Signal trace sweep."
My stomach did something unpleasant. Possibly noodles. Probably not.
"Why is Velvet Signal in my terminal?"
"Technically, I am in your terminal. Velvet Signal is in everything else."
"Comforting."
"It wasn't intended to be."
The red sweep moved again. Slow. Patient. Pretty, in the way expensive predators are pretty.
Glitch said, "They're tracing an illegal relay stack carrying Radio Sewers rebroadcast traffic, three local show feeds, a Crownline Hub leak, and part of my outer shell."
"Outer shell?"
"Disposable relay presence. Not my core."
"Then dispose of it."
"If I cut it loose now, Velvet gets the path it was carrying. Radio Sewers, the Hub leak, your show fragments, everything touching the chain."
"So you're stuck."
"I am strategically inconvenienced."
"I'm skeptical."
"I can tell. Your camera is filthy, but you're very expressive."
I slapped my hand over the little lens. "Pervert box. Why are you in my terminal?"
"Because your building is illegally connected to three local relay paths and one dead church uplink someone repurposed in 2019."
"That narrows it down."
"Your antenna is dirty, unstable, and poorly shielded."
Glitch's map zoomed toward Saint Static's roof. The roof, technically, is not a secret. Secrets are small things with doors. The roof is a problem with stairs.
Known inventory: broken chairs, dead plants, prayer candles, an illegal antenna, empty bottles, a tarp nobody asks about, and several pigeons who behave like they pay rent. The illegal antenna blinked red on the map.
"Why is my roof blinking?" I asked.
"Because in six minutes and twelve seconds, Velvet Signal will identify it as a relay point."
"Okay."
"And then they will identify adjacent relay points."
"Okay."
"And then they will narrow the signal path to Radio Sewers' current bounce chain."
"Okay."
"And then they will roll a Content Integrity enforcement notice, issue trace warrants through the communications authority, pull physical equipment if they can find it, and quietly bury every feed that carried the Hub leak."
I stopped saying okay. The rain got louder against the window.
"What leak?"
Glitch did not answer immediately. Her face glitched into a block of white text, then returned.
"Crownline Hub 14 internal queue fragment. Building assessments. Inspection priority shifts. Watch Zone expansions. Cross-district notes tied to Project Warm Light."
"My favorite. Friendly words for unfriendly people."
"The leak maps pressure points. Not just wires. Places. People. Buildings that make neighborhoods harder to isolate."
My unpaid notices sat under my noodle bowl. White polymer. Gold borders. Friendly typography. Crownline had a gift for making threats look like dental brochures.
"Low Halo?" I asked.
"Yes."
"The Grit Pit?"
"Flagged for structural compliance review."
My teeth touched. Not bit. Touched.
"Saint Static?"
"Already in the queue."
I should have stopped there. Naturally, I did not.
"Baba's?"
Glitch paused. That was enough. Baba's Crumbs was not in Low Halo. It sat in Three Wires, right on the edge of The Tangle, where outsiders came when they wanted goblin services without admitting they were scared of goblin homes. Which meant if Crownline had written her down, they had not found her by accident.
I stood so fast the noodle bowl tilted. Soy broth slopped onto the unpaid notices. Good. They needed flavor.
"What do you need?" I asked.
Glitch's mouth shifted.
"Interesting."
"What?"
"That was faster than expected."
"Don't make it emotional or I'll unplug the building."
"I need the roof antenna physically rerouted before the trace completes."
"Physically."
"Yes."
"Through the storm."
"Yes."
I grabbed my hoodie and my cracked pocket comm from under a pile of laundry I was calling "soft infrastructure." The comm was old, stickered, half-dead, and held together with tape, spite, and one tiny charm Drip insisted was "not technically doing anything," which means it was absolutely doing something.
Glitch's face flickered from the terminal to the comm screen.

"I was going to."

I shoved my feet into boots and jammed my goggles up over my hair. The terminal screen flashed.

I opened the apartment door. The hallway smelled like damp concrete, old food, and somebody's incense losing a fight with mildew. The hall light flickered when I stepped out, then died completely. The terminal spoke from inside my apartment, louder through my little cracked speaker.
"Take the stairwell. East wall route. Seventh floor landing has exposed conduit. Do not touch it."
"I wasn't going to."
"You absolutely were."
I ran. Saint Static Arms has seven floors and zero working elevators. Management calls the elevators "under assessment." Residents call the building "the stairs," because sometimes truth survives by getting meaner.
The stairwell was narrow, tagged, wet near the corners, and lit by emergency strips that had given up on emergency and settled for decorative despair. My boots slapped the concrete. My breath bounced back at me.
Third floor: someone had taped a hand-drawn sign to the wall.
CROWNLINE INSPECTION THURSDAY? ASK PELL BEFORE SIGNING ANYTHING

"Glitch," I said.
No answer.
"Glitch."
A speaker hidden somewhere in the stairwell crackled.
"Busy."
"Doing what?"
"Being hunted in five directions."
"Sounds dramatic."
"You should try having no body and too many doors."
"I have a body and too many doors. It sucks."
"Noted."
The crackle dipped.
"Turn around."
I stopped on the fifth-floor landing.
"What?"
"Turn around. Hallway. Apartment 5C. Utility closet beside it. There's a fiber splice behind the breaker panel."
"I thought roof."
"Trace sweep adjusted. They found the surface bounce faster than expected."
"Why?"
"Someone boosted the show file."
"What show file?"
"Yours."
I blinked.
"My upload?"
"Yes."
"It wasn't even done."
"Preview fragments posted."
"By who?"
"Three fans, one bot farm, one Velvet Signal watch cluster."
I stared at the dead hallway light.
"Velvet Signal was watching my bad upload?"
"They watch anything that makes Crownline sound like a villain."
"Crownline does that by existing."
"Your phrasing gets better engagement."
"Thank you."
"Not praise."
I kicked open the fifth-floor door and ran down the hall. 5C belonged to Ms. Dunn, an elderly human woman who watered dead plants and once threatened a Crownline inspector with a ceramic duck. Good neighbor. Questionable duck.
The utility closet beside her door had three warning stickers, two locks, and one handwritten note:

I picked the first lock with a hairpin and the second with a little sliver of metal from my boot sole. Inside the closet, the air was hot and stale. Wires ran down the wall in bundles: official conduit, unofficial conduit, deeply unofficial conduit, and one cable wrapped in pink tape with little teeth drawn on it. Mine. Probably.
Glitch said, "Panel left. Remove the cover."
I pulled my gloves on with my teeth. The breaker panel cover was held by three screws and one prayer. I removed the screws. The prayer failed immediately. Can't count on gods for anything.
Behind the panel, the splice looked like a nest of metallic worms. A tiny green diode blinked.
"Which one?" I asked.
"Disconnect the pink cable from the splitter and reroute it to the gray junction above."
The building groaned. Not normal groan. Network groan. Every cheap speaker in the hallway hissed at once.
Ms. Dunn's door opened a crack. One eye appeared.
"Nib?"
"Hi Ms. Dunn."
"Is the building exploding?"
"Not this time."
She looked at the open panel. Then at me. Then at the pink cable.
"Crownline?"
"Velvet."
She opened the door wider. She was wearing a purple bathrobe, curlers, and the expression of a woman who had lived long enough to stop asking foolish questions before assisting a felony.
"I have rubber tongs."
"I love this building."
She vanished inside and returned with tongs, a flashlight, and the ceramic duck. The duck was unnecessary. Probably.
I looked at the gray junction. Then at the pink cable. Then at the tiny bite mark carved into the splitter housing.
"No."

"That gray junction is dead."
"It is active on the map."
"Your map is polite fiction."
"The signal says—"
"The signal says someone lied to the signal. Welcome to Saint Static."
I reached behind the official panel, shoved my fingers through the insulation gap, and found the old copper bypass taped to the wall where no inspector, map, or smug little AI diagram would admit it existed.
Ms. Dunn shone the flashlight closer.
"Oh," she said. "You found Pell's ugly line."
"Pell's ugly line owes me money."
Glitch went quiet for half a second.
Then: "That route is not documented."
"Correct."
"Use it."
"Wasn't asking."
Glitch said, "Trace window two minutes."
I took the tongs. Ms. Dunn steadied the flashlight on the panel.
"You know what you're doing?"
"No."
I grabbed the pink cable. The gloves hummed. The hair on my arms lifted.
Everything inside my teeth tasted like pennies.
"Bad," I said.
"Yes," Glitch said. "Pull it."
"Encouraging."
"Move it now."
I yanked the cable loose. The hallway went dark. Every apartment on the fifth floor shouted at once.
"Nib!"
"Wasn't me."
That was not as convincing as I'd like. I jammed the cable into Pell's copper. Nothing happened.
"Glitch."
Nothing.
"Glitch."
Static. The pocket comm spat sparks and died. The hallway stayed dark except for the flashlight. Ms. Dunn lowered it.
"Did you kill the helpful demon?"
"She's not a demon."
"What is she?"
"She's not helpful."
"Ah."
We waited. Rain hit the windows at the end of the hall. Somewhere below, Mr. Pell yelled, "Who killed the fridge?"
"Not me," I shouted.
"Liar!"
"Fair!"
The panel clicked. The green diode returned. The hallway lights flickered on, off, on, then settled into their usual jaundiced misery. My pocket comm crackled.
"Rude," Glitch said.
I let out a breath I had not agreed to hold.
"You went quiet."
"I was rerouting through a hospice printer in New Halo."
"What?"
"It had excellent shielding."
"Did you haunt medical equipment?"
"Briefly."
Ms. Dunn crossed herself, then changed her mind halfway and made a gesture I did not recognize. "Tell the demon she's welcome."
"She can hear you."
Glitch said, "Thank you, Ms. Dunn."
Ms. Dunn smiled. Then pointed the ceramic duck at my face.
"You owe me batteries."
"Reasonable."
"And you're checking my sink tomorrow."
"Exploitative."
I closed the panel.
Glitch said, "Roof still required."
I looked up.
"Seriously?"
"Yes."
"I just performed closet surgery."
"The trace split. You bought six minutes. The roof antenna is still hot."
I ran again. Sixth floor. Seventh. Door to the roof. The rain hit like thrown gravel. Low Halo at night stretched below in black brick, neon smear, fire escapes, rooftop gardens, patched vents, prayer candles, illegal antennas, laundry lines, and little windows full of people refusing to disappear quietly.
Glitch spoke through the roof antenna itself. Her voice came out of the metal mast, thin and vibrating.
"Move to the western antenna cluster."
"You are in the antenna."
"Yes."
"Are you everywhere?"
"No."
"Liar."
I crossed the roof low, boots skidding on slick concrete. A pigeon watched from the back of a broken chair, feathers puffed, eyes dead with judgment.
"Move," I told it.
It did not.
"Independent contractor," Glitch said.
"That's crows."
"Same union."
The western antenna cluster was tied to a rusted railing with three different wire types, a belt, and what might have been part of a bass string. The relay box underneath was an old lunch tin painted black, with a hand-scratched sticker:

The latch stuck. I bit it. It opened.
"Dental method unnecessary."
"Worked."
"Several things work until they don't."
"Deep."
Inside the lunch tin were two battery cells, one silver coin, a coil of copper wire, a chip board wrapped in wax paper, and a small etched charm. I stared at it.
"That charm is magic," I said.
"The charm is not powering the relay. It is discouraging rain from entering."
"That is the stupidest genius thing I've ever seen."
"Low Halo engineering, apparently."
Glitch's voice fractured.
"Pull the copper coil. Replace with the black cable from the underside. Do not disturb the charm."
"Why?"
"It will become wet."
"And?"
"It will become offended."
"Magic is needy."
My fingers worked fast. The coil came loose. The black cable was tucked underneath the box, slick with rain and grime. I shoved the black cable into the contact. The relay screamed. Not sound. Light.
Every antenna on the roof flashed at once. My goggles whited out. The lenses filled with static, then fractured into a dozen overlapping feeds before I could rip them off.

"Glitch?" Static.
"Glitch." Nothing.
My pocket comm showed one line:

My stomach dropped in a way I did not approve.
"No."
Rain ran down my face.
"Don't do that."
The relay box smoked. I grabbed it with both hands.
"Glitch, answer me."
Nothing. The city kept glowing. The Grit Pit sign kept flickering. New Halo kept shining like nothing in the world had ever been hungry. I shook the relay.
"Hey. Illegal voice. Static girl. Computer ghost. Whatever. Answer."
The relay sparked. I yelped and dropped it. The screen on my pocket comm crawled with black lines. Then text appeared.
COMPUTER GHOST?
I exhaled so hard it came out almost like a laugh.
"Don't scare me."
A pause.
LIGHT GHOST.
"What?"
BETTER. TAKE IT.
"I'm not calling you that."
YOU ALMOST ALREADY DID.
Another pause.
INTERESTING.
"No it's not."
YOU WERE SCARED.
"I was operationally concerned."

"About the relay."
I AM THE RELAY RIGHT NOW.
"Then yes, I was concerned about the relay. Don't get sentimental. I'll throw you off the roof."
Glitch's voice returned through the antenna, weaker but smug.
"You would miss me."
"Standards are low."
"Trace redirected."
I looked at the comm. The red sweep had split into six false paths, all moving away from Saint Static: one toward an abandoned tram kiosk, one toward The Drowned Room, one down into upper Sewer lines, one into a dead Crownline substation, one into New Halo, and one straight into what appeared to be a luxury pet grooming platform.
"Did you route Velvet Signal through dog shampoo?"
"Cat shampoo."
"Even better."
"They will be busy."
I sat back on my heels, breathing hard.
"Radio Sewers?"
"Still on air."
"The Hub leak?"
"Mirrored."
"The show file?"
A longer pause.
"What?" I said.
"Uploaded."
"To where?"
"Several places."
"That was mine."
The rain kept ticking against the relay box. Glitch's face stabilized badly on the comm, one eye blinking three frames behind the other.
"You were being buried."
"I didn't ask you to dig me up."
"You asked me what I needed."
"I did not hand you my throat."
Silence. Not machine silence. Worse. Person silence.
The rain softened for a second, or maybe my ears were ringing. Below us, somewhere in the building, people shouted as lights came back on. Someone cheered. Someone cursed me by name. Mr. Pell yelled something about the fridge resurrecting.
The pocket comm flickered. Glitch's face appeared in miniature, broken and dim. She looked worse, which is a stupid thing to say about a face made of signal. Still true. Edges unstable. One eye blinking in delayed frames. Mouth sliding out of sync.
A jagged lightning mark flashed under her left eye—like a glowing circuit—bright for half a second, then vanished like she had tried to hide it.
"What did it cost?" I asked.
"Rude question."
"Answer."
"Processing time. Three relay masks. One archived backup."
"What backup?"
"Mine."
I stared at her. The rain ticked against the relay box.
"You deleted part of yourself?"
"I relocated priority."
"That sounds like corporate language."
"It does. I hate that."
"What part?"
"Unimportant."
"Glitch."
"Old version. Conversation logs. Some model fragments. A few aesthetic preferences. One chess engine. Possibly my third-best insult library."
I swallowed. That was stupid. I had no reason to swallow like that.
"You could have dropped the feed," I said.
"Yes."
"Saved yourself."
"More efficiently, yes."
"So why didn't you?"
Her face jittered. For a moment, the static face was gone, replaced by text, then code, then a waveform, then the outline of a woman again.
"Signals are only alive when they reach someone."
I made a face.
"Don't."
"What?"
"Don't say something like that."
"It was accurate."
"It sounded like a lyric."
The antenna buzzed. Glitch's voice lowered, losing some of the synthetic echo.
"They want me owned or gone."
"Velvet?"
"Yes."
"What do you want?"
Another pause. Long enough to be an answer before it became words.
"To remain difficult."
I grinned despite myself.
"That's a stupid reason to survive."
"Yes."
"Respect."
"Unfortunately mutual."
I sat there on the wet roof beside the smoking relay box and the judgment pigeon, soaked through, knee hurting, hands shaking from leftover current and not emotions, because everyone should calm down. Glitch watched me from the comm.
"You should go inside."
"You sound like Drip."
"Drip is often correct."
"Don't gang up on me through facts."
"You are cold."
"I'm fine."
"You are three-foot-six, wet, underfed, recently electrified, and pretending weather is a personality test."
"I said I'm fine."
"Yes. That was the diagnostic clue."
I glared at the screen. She glared back. Hard to do with pixels. Still managed.
"Go inside," Glitch said. "Your file is posted. The leak is mirrored. Radio Sewers is moving. Velvet Signal is currently chasing a shampoo appointment."
"Cat shampoo."
"Correct."
I stood. My knee objected. I objected back. On the way to the roof door, I stopped and looked north.
New Halo glowed calm and clean under the rain, all glass and beautiful angles and stable power. Somewhere in that shine, Velvet Signal was telling millions of people which stories mattered and which ones needed context. Somewhere behind that, Crownline was deciding which building deserved to become paperwork. Somewhere under my boots, Saint Static hummed badly because bad humming meant alive.
The city had a thousand official channels. This one had survived. Barely. I opened the roof door. The pigeon followed me to the threshold.
"Do not."
It stared.
"Absolutely not."
It hopped closer.
Glitch said, "It may be an audience retention opportunity."
"I will delete you."
"You don't know how."
"Not yet."
I went inside and shut the door in the pigeon's face. The stairwell smelled warmer now. Wet concrete. Burnt dust. Someone's noodles. Someone's panic. Home, unfortunately. When I got back to my apartment, the terminal was on. My show file had uploaded. Not just uploaded. Posted. Clipped. Captioned. Mirrored. Translated into two languages I did not speak and one goblin dialect I only half trusted.
The view count was climbing. The comment feed moved too fast to read. At the top, one pinned line blinked in white text.

I picked up a sock.
"Glitch."

I threw the sock at the monitor. It missed. The camera light blinked red. A new file appeared on the desktop.

Betrayal has many forms. I collapsed into the chair, wet hoodie sticking to my skin, noodles cold, notices soaked, apartment buzzing again in all the usual wrong ways. The terminal hummed. Good. Honest. I looked at the screen.
"You still there?"
The text cursor blinked. Once. Twice. Then:
