I was carrying a junction box through three inches of slush when I understood what Crownline actually was.
Not a company. Not an infrastructure provider. Not the thing on the signs and the pamphlets and the permit forms Baba filed every year in triplicate with a fee attached.
A decision. Made by people who would never be cold.
The cut happened on a Tuesday. No warning. One minute The Tangle had lights, the next it didn't, and the official notice — two hours later, slipped under doors, stapled to posts — said unsanctioned grid access and compliance review and temporary service interruption in language so clean it barely touched the ground.
It was January. The City doesn't get storybook cold. It gets lawsuit cold. The kind that kills you slowly enough for someone to say nobody could've predicted it.
The Tangle had old people. Sick people. Small people. No heat.
Baba didn't panic. She shifted. Whatever she'd been doing — the bread, the books, the quiet thing in the back room she didn't explain — she put it down and started making calls.
Not to Crownline. You don't call Crownline. Crownline doesn't answer in a way that helps.
By nightfall someone had a schematic. By midnight someone had parts. By three in the morning the goblins of The Tangle were building a patch grid out of scavenged wire and recovered components and the kind of engineering that happens when you've spent your whole life surviving without permission.
I ran parts.
Which sounds heroic if you say it wrong. It mostly meant being cold, fast, and small enough to fit through gaps that adults with functional spines couldn't. I knew the rooftop routes. I knew the alleys. I knew which walls to hug and when to go still and wait. I'd been learning The Tangle since I could walk and I'd been walking faster than was probably safe since about a week after that.
I smelled like slush and overheated wire for four days. It was fine. I've smelled worse.
The grid worked for four days.
Four days of lights and heat and The Tangle running on its own terms, the way it always had, because that's what The Tangle does. You break it and it patches itself. You shut it down and it finds another route. You file a form and it files the form in the nearest drain and keeps moving.
On the fifth day the inspectors came.
Three of them. Crownline vests. Clipboards. Boots that had never navigated a busted sidewalk in the dark. They came in the daytime, which I think was deliberate. Hard to argue with a clipboard in the daylight. They called it a safety concern. Said the patch grid was unsanctioned. Said it was a fire risk, which it wasn't — it had been built by people who knew what they were doing, which was more than I could say for whoever designed the original installation.
They said the city had a legal obligation to remove it.
Then they removed it.
I watched from a roof two buildings over. Someone had left a half-eaten container of soup up there. It was cold. I ate it anyway because I was nine and running on spite.
Here's the thing:
anger doesn't hit clean.
it stacks.
boot print. clipboard. smile. form. another form. polite voice explaining something that is happening to you regardless of whether you understand it.
then you're nine years old on a roof eating someone else's cold soup and you think: oh. this is what hate is for.
Not the theatrical kind. Not the kind where someone twists their mustache and admits they're evil. That kind's almost easier because at least there's a villain with a face.
This was worse.
This was organized.
We were an infrastructure irregularity. A compliance issue. A box on a form that needed to be resolved before somebody's quarterly review. Nobody in those vests looked up at the roof where I was standing.
They didn't break the law.
They just used it.
They had a form for it. A vest. A process. Language so clean it barely touched the ground, and somewhere in an office that had heat the whole time, someone signed off on a compliance action and went home for dinner.
That's not villainy.
That's worse.
That's Tuesday.
I climbed down when they left and didn't say anything to Baba because there wasn't anything to say that she didn't already know. She'd known longer than I'd been alive. This wasn't a lesson she could teach me. It was one I had to learn on my own schedule, in slush, on a roof, eating abandoned soup.
She made food. Extra food. The kind of extra that means something happened that she can't fix and this is the thing she has instead.
I noticed.
Neither of us mentioned it.
Baba made the face she makes when she is absolutely not proud of something.
Which means she was.
Obviously.
Don't tell her I said that.
The patch grid went back up six days later.
Different route. Better design. Nobody filed anything.
